Violet was an English long-distance runner who was the first woman to record an official time for a marathon in 1926. She finished in 3 hours 40 minutes. At the time, it was thought that running damaged women’s health, and it was nearly 60 years before women were allowed to run a marathon at the Olympic Games for the first time, in 1984.
